this movie is what could have happened if the comedy team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis had gone bad. i mean, really really really bad. (when their partnership broke up, Martin hooked up with Sinatra and co.)
given the Rat Pack's supposed involvement with the Mafia and sordid dealings with JFK/Marilyn Monroe, maybe this movie isn't too far from certain real events. this movie could be viewed as what they were doing in between takes during the shooting the original Ocean's 11. to say more would ruin all the twists and turns. suffice to say, the 1950s and early 1970s costumes and art direction are GROOOOVY, baby!!
and a shocker: THIS MOVIE IS BASED ON A NOVEL BY RUPERT HOLMES. that's right, the Pina Colada and MellowTouch classic Terminal singer actually wrote the novel this movie was based on!! if you liked Greg Kinnear and Willem Dafoe in AUTO FOCUS, and DiCaprio and Hanks in CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, you'll definitely enjoy Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth in Where The Truth Lies, a perfectly nice slice of the AIDS-free decadence from the 1950s to the 1970s.
(the scene in the First Class section of a Pan Am flight is a retro hoot!)
