after months and months of waiting for a Definitive Dibidi edition in Quiapo,
i finally found the rip of the U.S. widescreen release,
which includes the commentary track of writer-director Craig Brewer.

here's my Hustling & Glowing review :

the 1st burst of pleasure arrives when you see the animated DVD menus.
they're designed to look like boombox bass speakers vibrating with a very very heavy beat, practically leaping out of your TV screen!

the 2nd scream of excitement comes when you realize that you can now actually
understand the very deep Southern Memphis slang and accents because you have impeccable subtitles.

the 3rd sigh of contentment is when you check and notice that the full director/writer commentary track is part of the didibi package..... and this is one of the most heartfelt and informative commentaries i've ever listened to. not your usual " this is how we set up the shot" crap. Craig Brewer talks at length about the casting process, guerilla filmmaking, how to get financing, how to build a soundtrack, how to negotiate with ridiculous rap artists........ truly An Invaluable Film School Lecture.

and finally, the 4th shudder of cinematic orgasm comes (!) while watching the movie itself. It's a damn good down & dirty depiction of how street cred, pimping, guns, bling, and most of all, faith in dreams, play an essential part in the success of any Rap or HipHop Gangsta artist.

and yes, you will get to realize, through this film, that the Rap is Art. Poetry to be exact.

i guarantee you:
even if you hate hardcore hiphop, you'll be grooving to "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp"
long after you finish watching this excellent excellent excellent movie!!

p.s. did i mention that DJ Qualls rounds off the fine cast and plays a key character?
